[OpenIndiana-discuss] lightdm fails!

Hello,

In my system I tried  once to enable lightdm but I could not log in so
I reverted to gdm that worked just fine. The latest version of hipster
has removed all gdm related things and now I cannot log in to my account!
The login screen appears, I enter my user name and my password, the screen
becomes black and then I see the login screen again and again and again.
Is there ant way to actually login into my account? BTW, it is possible
to reinstall the missing gdm bits?

A.S.

PS I have found a way to solve the problem of getting accents on Greek letters
(this is on a different machine). I just start ibus from the
System --> Control Center, logout, login and it works! Of course this
is not  solution but a hack since the original input method should work...

Hi.
1) It's not possible to reinstall gdm, it was removed.
2) You can look at ~/.xsession-errors. If it doesn't help, you can try
set lightdm/args property of lightdm service to "-d" and look at
messages in syslog.

that disappears immediately and I see some messages on the terminal:

Could not enumerate user data directory /var/lib/lightdm-data: Permission

If running the thing as root set the permissions incorrectly may be the fix
is not too difficult.

Could not enumerate user data directory /var/lib/lightdm-data: Permission denied
If running the thing as root set the permissions incorrectly may be the fix is not too difficult.
First:

/usr/sbin/beadm list
BE        Active Mountpoint Space Policy Created
hipster-1 -      -          28,8M static 2016-08-06 22:50
hipster-3 -      -          30,9M static 2016-09-25 20:06

hipster-9 R      -          241G  static 2018-05-04 16:30

It is impossible to log in to hipster-9. I made the tests on
hipster-8. So what is exactly that you are suggesting? And no:
running as root did not set anything (at least that's my understanding).
In fact, when I run the test command as root, the login screen appeared
so the test worked. When I run the test command as an ordinary user, it
failed.

In order to try to understand what is possible wrong, I tried to run lightdm in my porevious BE
that contained thed November 2017 bits.
lightdm is working fine on my system. I last updated a couple weeks ago,
so it was current as of mid-April, 2018.

When I did the switch from parts-of-gnome with gdm to only MATE with
lightdm, I followed the advice of others that had already been through
that process:

sudo svcadm disable gdm
sudo svcadm enable lightdm

To ensure lightdm started correctly on boot, I then rebooted. That
was all it took for me to get a working lightdm.

Regarding the log messages you're seeing...

I see messages of this type every time lightdm is restarted, so they
appear to be "normal" for lightdm on OI.

They get logged to the svc log file for lightdm, which you can locate in
the output of 'svcs -l lightdm'.

** (lightdm:1009): WARNING **: Could not enumerate user data directory /var/lib/lightdm-data: Permission denied
That's happening because you're running the test as a normal user.

lightdm: Got tty: '/dev/dtlocal'
Your tty name looks weird, but considering how you're running the test,
that may not be relevant.

That's again because you're running the test as yourself. Once you've
been able to successfully login (once) with lightdm, it will auto-create
that directory with correct permissions.

Try this in your current BE (not some old BE):

1) truncate the contents of the svc log file for lightdm. You can get its
location with

svcs -l lightdm | egrep logfile

2) once that file is empty, make certain that lightdm is enabled and gdm is
disabled.

3) reboot.

4) if lightdm does not correctly start up, include the contents of the log
file in a message to the list.

Hopefully there will be something obvious in the log file from a standard
startup of lightdm.

Back in January I tried to enable lightdm which failed and I got this:

I have checked on the new BE and I get similar messages.

Request: Can I have the gdm bits back please?

Could it be that you are missing a dependency?

How did you migrate to MATE? Did you install mate_install?

This is unfortunately impossible, the code has been deprecated a long time
ago and cannot be maintained independently.

Glad I could help. You and many other people on the mailing list have
provided information and solutions to issues I've run into, so I'm happy
