Hello there,
I have tried to find if there is any ready packages for running KDE on
openindiana but the repository i find is for sparc and is no longer
available ...

I probably do not have to tell you that I am quiet new to the solaris world
as you probably already had figured it out. I have used GNU/linux for a
long time and have freeBSD for my zfs server though but am now moving on
deeper in to the Unixverse .. I have done some programming on Z/os with
cobol but that is it.

So if anyone can point me in the right direction... where to find KDE i
would be happie ... or is it that i have to compile it and is it anything
that I have to think about when i compile on Unix compared to if i compile
it on GNU/Linux?

Best Regards

Hi and welcme

There are unfortunately no packages for kde. We only want desktops that we can support. The Kde community is interested but lacking knowledge and we are restrained by lack of people.

That said i would personaly be interested if somebody starts porting and will gladly help with knowledge. And running it so we can test for problems.

Kde should not be hard. Just time consuming because it's a huge amount of software.

best point to start with compiling is https://github.com/openindiana/oi–userland it has all the makefiles to set required environment variables etc so stuff works. The best software to start would be sddm. It is independant and we could test it without the rest of kde.

In any case. I would love to see somebody take this up.

If you have any questions just ask.

If you look through todays/yesterdays mails on the list you will find more links about oi–userland

Greetings
Till wegmüller

It's a very small group of people that are currently advancing the parts
of OI that are only present on OI. Everyone likes choice and flexibility,
but packaging and testing multiple graphical desktop environments would
reduce the time that the core contributors could spend on other things.
They've settled on MATE as the single desktop environment they want to provide.

Keep in mind too that they have their own reasons for using and
contributing to OI, so spending a bunch of time porting, building, and
packaging something that they won't personally use is probably not very
appealing.

People with the time, drive, and interest to contribute other environments
are welcome, but something as big as KDE isn't a contribution that's
ever "done". It's a bit of a long-term commitment to try provide a second
graphical desktop environment. It would be counterproductive to have
one KDE version packaged and provided but then have it go un-maintained and
bit-rot or have security issues go unpatched.

Another task would be to update Qt from 5.8 to 5.9 since 5.9 is a LTS.
I added 5.8 but have no time to look at 5.9, it should not be too hard.

Rely good answers ...
MATE is what i will go for ..

My Jr COBOL85 skills will not do much help .. I totally understand ... a
window is just a window ..

I think that if any of the KDE community guys would find there way to
openindiana then KDE environment might follow her or him but there is no
use rely for it ... I might play a bit with trying to compile things just
to get a feeling of things but i have not got the deep skills for porting
and programming .

Anyway ... it was nice to say hello as well ... you guys were not as grumpy
as i have read about hehe.

I wasn't super enthusiastic about MATE when hipster switched to
it from its (deprecated, unmaintained) predecessor, but after having
used it for a while, I'm pretty happy with it. I love that I can use
'gsettings' and 'dconf' in a script to set all the graphical settings
that I normally would change through the UI. Very handy when bringing
up a VM to test something.

If there was a community of people that got KDE ported and packaged for
OI and seemed serious about maintaining it, I think it's pretty likely
it would be accepted into the distribution. And we're talking about
open-source software, so even if it was never officially integrated, if
it worked well and was maintained, you could always put up your own repo and
make it available to people that wanted to use it.

Keep in mind that compiling software and building packages isn't the
only way people can help. We've been talking about it in this thread
because you asked about KDE, but things like helping keep documentation
on the wiki or docs.openindiana.org up to date would also be a great
way to contribute.

:-) I've found the OI community to be quite welcoming and indeed they
encourage contributions from people, including porting, updating, and
packaging. Growing the list of contributors is something I think most
people would like to see.
