Hi all, please see below for test images for the various
distributions. These images include the KPTI (and PCID) work done by
Joyent up to the current kpti-squash branch. They are non-DEBUG except
as noted.

As before, any and all testing is useful, especially with "weird"
things like LDT-using code, older machines, etc.

Thanks to Aurélien Larcher and Andy Fiddaman for building the OI and
OmniOS images below.

thanks
john

Hi.
1) Current testing is not related to multimedia, we want to know general
user experience with new illumos-gate bits.
2) You can always use http://pkg.openindiana.org/hipster-encumbered/
repository to get a basic set of multimedia packages (basically, vlc and
gstreamer codecs).
3) If you find that some software is missing, nothing prvents you from
adding it to oi-userland. There's always an issue - the more software we
have, more power we need to support it. And with basic team of 3-5 men
it's a big problem.

I am new to openindiana/illumos, and I was wondering the same. I
understand openindiana can use NetBSD's pkgsrc.

Would it be best to contribute new packages directly to pkgsrc, so that
they would hopefully be maintained by a more numerous team, and still
benefitting openindiana (and illumos)?

Yes, I understand that the OI team is small.

I will continue to use this test version but install it on a PC directly.

Currently the system is fast on boot. Mate envirionment works well.

The only problem encountered is the gcc compiler. Maybe I don't have all
the packages installed. But I don't know about that. If someone can give me
the list of packages to install to compile, I'd be happy.

The only problem encountered is the gcc compiler. Maybe I don't have all
the packages installed. But I don't know about that. If someone can give me
the list of packages to install to compile, I'd be happy.
We provide a metapackage named "build-essential" which should cover most
development requirements.

You can inspect the list of component provided by this metapackage at

https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland/blob/oi/hipster/components/meta-packages/build-essential/build-essential.p5m

Another hint is to look at package dependencies directly, liste in
REQUIRED_PACKAGES:

https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland/blob/oi/hipster/components/encumbered/vlc/Makefile

When components are built from oi-userland, calling "gmake env-prep" within
a component directory will install the listed dependencies.

In any case if you deal with multimedia packages you need to add the
hipster-encumbered publisher:

# pkg set-publisher -O http://pkg.openindiana.org/hipster-encumbered/
hipster-encumbered

You need the correct credentials to do so.

Instead of running as root, I prefer to add the "Software Installation"
profile to my user:

usermod -P "Software Installation" username

After this, you can perform action with pkg ad beadm just with pfexec (like
you would do with sudo).

Kind regards

Aurelien

You might lose some level of system integration (services, mediators,
facets) and be impacted by system changes that pkgsrc is not aware
of.
Prioritizing pkgsrc may be convenient to some extent but there are
trade offs (which I personally think are too big).
If the goal is to have a consistent illumos distribution, best is to
improve the build system and packages provided by the OS. Maintaining
a selected set of packages allows better control on the quality of the
packages delivered.
When it comes to multimedia packages we have VLC which covers most
pratical uses. If someone steps up to support another player that
provides more features why not, but if it is a matter of aesthetics
one needs to justify the maintenance burden.
I started contributing to oi-userland a few years ago, and it is not
as difficult as I thought it would be :)
Kind regards
Aurelien
Thank you very much for the clarification.

I am coming from FreeBSD (since 2002, both on servers and workstations).

I am just getting my feet wet with openindiana.

I am studying Pro OpenSolaris, and getting to OpenSolaris Bible later,
having my first install on a ThinkPad W541. I must say, I was impressed
on how smooth and flawless the install was, in comparison to Win 10,
FreeBSD 11 or even Linux Mint.

From the overall feel of it I know this is home.

I would like very much to contribute some packages, when (if ever) I'll
have enough expertise.

As I understand, then, it would be better to contribute to openindiana
repositories, as found here:https://www.openindiana.org/packages/

When the time will come, would I be able to "pester" people on this
list, in regards to creating new packages? Or better the oi-dev list?

Thank you.

Hello All!

While trying to test-install libreoffice  to resolve the problem
"Invalid child image publisher configuration.  Child image publisher
configuration must be a superset of the parent image publisher
configuration."
because i have non-global zones..

i stumbled over
http://docs.openindiana.org/handbook/systems-administration/#zones

The mentioned package "zones-proxy-client" is missing
whilst "zones-proxy" could be installed..

Am i missing something?
Any hint would be nice :-)

Hi Stephan,

I had same problem. Fixed by installing and using

system/zones/brand/nlipkg

instead of

system/zones/brand/ipkg

for zones (thanks to Alexander Pyhalov [https://github.com/pyhalov] and
its blog)

Regards.

You will need to set brand=nlipkg in zonecfg afterward.

And probably reinstall the Zone for it to take effect.

Hope it helps

Hi.
If you use 'ipkg'-branded zones (default), all publishers present in GZ
should be present in NGZ (and in the same order). That's what the error

Hi!

Thanks for your hints!

Not all of my zones where running, so there was no easy way to set the
publishers in the NGZ's.

Your hints pointed me to this page
http://alp-notes.blogspot.de/2016/03/converting-linked-images-zones-to-non.html

Following the instructions,
after editing the    /etc/zones/zoneX.xml
and removing   /zones/build/zoneX/root/var/pkg/linked
for every zone X
the installation finished properly :-)

I'm happy :-)

Thanks!!

Hi,

I did the real installation on my Lenovo T400 and all works perfectly.
The only problem is the sound. I don't have any sound. Even if the drivers
are installed.

Hi,
I did the real installation on my Lenovo T400 and all works perfectly.
The only problem is the sound. I don't have any sound. Even if the drivers are installed.

Hi,

I had the same issue, I believe that is common to all OpenSOlaris
installs.

The instructions in the comment at the bottom of this page helped me:

https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=xstreamos

Copy and pasting here:

================

Also like any Solaris based systems (Solaris 11.3 or OpenIndiana) when
installing on real hardware
audio defaults to wrong device (audiohd#0), to switch default to
audiohd#1 (to have sound in Firefox)
remove existing links
# rm /dev/audio
# rm /dev/audioctl
# rm /dev/dsp
create new
# ln -s /dev/sound/1 /dev/audio
# ln -s /dev/sound/1ctl /dev/audioctl
# ln -s /dev/dsp1 /dev/dsp

to see settings before/after change use
$ ls -l /dev/audio
$ ls -l /dev/audioctl
$ ls -l /dev/dsp
to see available options
$ cat /dev/sndstat
$ ls /dev/sound

Thank you, I was wondering why.

If it is common, perhaps it would be nice to add it somewhere on the
OpenIndiana wiki or Handbook.

I am still testing my system, later on I could send a pull request with
that text.

The more I use OpenIndiana, the more I love it!

Now, I will try to install it on two more machines, an HP Z620
workstation with Xeon E5, and a custom made workstation with AMD 1950X
Threadripper. I will report back.

I didn't quite understand the solution. Do I need to edit a file?
I also forgot to mention that I have the same sound problem on the
installation I did on my desktop (in virtualbox)

On the Desktop I have a dedicated Asus D1 sound card whose driver is
cmi8788.

There seems to be a problem with Pulseaudio.
If you have a solution eventually, I'll apply it.

Can you check that pulseaudio is actually running?

`pgrep pulseaudio` should return the PID.

If not, try to run `pulseaudio -vvv`

The issue may be related to pulseaudio as your audio device seems detected
by the native audio subsystem.
You can double check that it works using audiotest.

Hi,
I had the same issue, I believe that is common to all OpenSOlaris
installs.
I believe this is a limitation of the OSS Pulseaudio backend which
picks the first detected device.
Thank you, I was wondering why.
If it is common, perhaps it would be nice to add it somewhere on the
OpenIndiana wiki or Handbook.
I am still testing my system, later on I could send a pull request

Can you check that pulseaudio is actually running?
`pgrep pulseaudio` should return the PID.
If not, try to run `pulseaudio -vvv`
The issue may be related to pulseaudio as your audio device seems detected
by the native audio subsystem.
You can double check that it works using audiotest.

If you are studying the books you will definately have enough expertise.
The Packaging is made with Custom makefiles based on the current

Hi,
It's possible to set old publisher (151a) for install
audio/driver/audiocmihd and unset publisher after ?
Why do you need to use the old publisher?
What is wrong with the current driver?

I did the real installation on my Lenovo T400 and all works perfectly.
The only problem is the sound. I don't have any sound. Even if the
drivers

are installed.
